This year’s path to the playoffs for Dak Prescott and Jared Goff have been very different but such is the norm with these two quarterbacks. Jared Goff was the darling of the 2016 NFL Draft and the Rams mortgaged their future to take him first overall. The Cowboys swung for other options before they landed Dak Prescott with their fourth-round compensatory pick. Dak came in for Tony Romo and went on to have the best rookie season ever and ushered in a new era for the Cowboys. Jared Goff started on the bench and was winless in seven rookie starts for the Rams. Not about to waste a single moment , the Rams cleaned house of the Jeff Fisher-regime and started anew with an innovative young coach Sean McVay. Jared Goff’s Rams made the playoffs in last season while Dak Prescott’s Cowboys missed the mark by one awful game in Atlanta. Dak Prescott found himself in sort of a slump that carried into this season as Dallas was 3-5 at the halfway mark. Jared Goff was one of the hottest quarterbacks on one of the best teams at 8-0 through the first-half of this season:Lg. Rk.First 8 GamesTMW/LCmpAttCmp%YDsTDIntRateSkFUM.Y/A626Through those eight games, these quarterbacks were on very different trajectories in their careers. Jared Goff was a rising star and Dak Prescott’s star had fallen but imagine if it continued like that throughout the entire season:Lg. Rk.ProjectedFinishTMW/LCmpAttCmp%YDsTDIntRateSkFUM.Y/A626For one, Jared Goff would be compared to every great passer from Joe Montana to Tom Brady. Dak Prescott would be looking at two-consecutive seasons without a playoff berth and the questions about his long-term future would multiply in the media. Well, as these two prepare to lead their teams to victory with a trip to the NFC Championship game on the line, trajectories have certainly changed. At the 3-5 crossroads, the Cowboys decided that the season was very salvageable and wanted to double-down on Dak Prescott. The front officewent out and mortgaged a little of their future to add Amari Cooper, putting the ball in Dak’s court to perform. The Cowboys went 8-1 over the last nine games, winning the NFC East, and knocking off the wild card Seahawks to advance to this game. On the opponent’s side of things, Jared Goff wasn’t a perfect 16-0 and the loss of his favorite target Cooper Kupp in week 11 stung a little. Todd Gurley, arguably the best player on the Rams offense has been healing up since Christmas so that’s also figured in. After all, Goff’s Rams earned a little rest, they finished the season 13-3, with the NFC’s second-seed, and a first-round bye.Just as Dak Prescott was a big part of the 3-5 start he was just as crucial to this 8-1 run. The same can be said for Goff, who was a big part of the 8-0 start but has had a share of struggles in the 5-3 finish. Now, there are arguments to be made about the wave of momentum and what role it plays in the playoff. Through the second-half of this season, the momentum is all with Dak Prescott:Lg.Rk.2nd HalfTMW/LCmpAttCmp%YdsPASSTDRUSH TDINTQB RateSkFUMY/A46Dak has been on quite a tear and without his elevated playmaking abilities, the Cowboys wouldn’t be anywhere near the playoffs. Now Jeff Heath Jersey , the Rams defense is better than advertised and are capable of creating havoc for quarterbacks. They have arguably the best defensive player in football with Aaron Donald. He and Michael Brockers will put pressure on Prescott, who has been sacked 57 times this season. The Dallas line has been compromised but have played much better in recent weeks. Also, don’t forget that it’s the Cowboys who are bringing the top-rated remaining playoff defense into LA, that’s certainly going to be a factor for Jared Goff,.The Rams are talent-rich and very well-coached so you can bet that they will be ready for this high-stakes game in front of their hometown crowd. At the same time, the Cowboys have called southern California a second-home for years so expect the visitors side to be well-represented as well. In these games, with so many comparable variables, it usually comes down to the quarterback, the most important position in football. Jared Goff and his Rams were good enough to have mostly everything sewn up by Thanksgiving. For Dak Prescott, he and the Cowboys have been in playoff-mode for over two months. Just like no other team has won more one-score games this season than Dallas, no quarterback has engineered more game-winning drives in the past three years than Dak Prescott:RkCareer TMGWDCmpAttCmp%YdsTDIntRateSkTDPts121Dak has engineered three times as many game-winning drives as Jared Goff. Prescott has six this season to Goff’s four. Dak has completed 69% of his passes for 1,801 yards, with a 103 passer rating in those six game. He also has accounted for 11 passing touchdowns and three rushing scores, which is half of his season total of 28 coming in games where he lead his team to victory on a game-winning drive. That’s quite the accomplishment for a young quarterback but that just embodies who Dak is. When the pressure is insurmountable, which it often is during the playoffs, the quarterbacks that have the toughness find ways to overcome it. So far in three short seasons, Prescott has 30 games where he’s been sacked multiple times to Jared Goff’s 23 games:Multi-Sack GmsQBW/LComp.Att.%YPGTDINTQB RateSacksYds/AttIn the face of pressure, through all the hits, sacks Tyrone Crawford Color Rush Jersey , or other circumstances, that’s when we see the best of Dak Prescott. That’s why the Cowboys have a decent shot at this because they have the edge at quarterback. Nov 11, 2018. The Dallas Cowboys were headed to The Linc in Philadelphia for what many thought would be their burial. The Cowboys came into the game 3-5 after an embarrassing loss to the Titans and nobody gave them a chance for a revival. It was the worst of times after the Cowboys had dealt away a first-round pick for Amari Cooper, but that move seemed like it wasn’t going to help at all in 2018. Most in Cowboys Nation were already looking at prospective coaches who could replace Jason Garrett in 2019. Troy Aikman had basically called out for an overhaul of the whole organization, including, apparently, the Joneses. An era looked liked it was coming to a close and a very uncertain future was ahead for a team without a first-round draft pick. Then this happened: Cowboys 27 - Eagles 20. Boom!It all changed. Here were some of the big sotrylines that came out of that game. The LVE coming out partyIt wasn’t like we didn’t understand that Leighton Vander Esch was a quality player heading into the Eagles game. He had already had three games with double-digit tackles. In the early part of the season, fans were tantalized by LVE’s talent but were still hesitant to proclaim him worthy of the first-round draft pick. As time rolled on, it became apparent that he was a cut above, that the Cowboys had got it right. Starting with the Eagles game, we started to see the emergence of a star. LVE had 13 tackles and the pick, which would have been enough. But one of those tackles was this game-saving effort that really put him on the map. Fast-forward to this week, and Cowboys fans are up in arms over Jerry Jones suggesting that Sean Lee would be the starter again when healthy. Times have changed.Feed Zeke to help DakThe Cowboys offense was suffering before the Eagles game. Besides a crazy explosion against the Jaguars and a good game against the Lions, it was one big struggle. Dak Prescott had us wondering if his 2016 year was some kind of mirage and there was open debate about Prescott being the quarterback for the long term. Additionally, the Cowboys could not get Ezekiel Elliott going on a regular basis. In the eight games the Cowboys had played, Elliott was held to under 100 yards five times, that was just not something fans were used to. Elliott had exploded against the Lions for 152 yards on the ground, and he also had 88 yards receiving in that game. Overall, though , there was a feeling Zeke was being under-used and not as effective as everyone knew he could be. So Dak and Zeke were both having their issues for different reasons, but it all came together against Philly. And, of course, this happened:Since that game, Dak and Zeke have been on fire. Dak hasn’t had a game below 68% completion percentage or thrown an interception in his last four games including the Philly game, and has broken a 100 passer rating in three out of four of those games. Zeke had three one-hundred yard games in a row and has been more of a force in the passing game. The Great Wall starts its rebuildThe Cowboys identity used to be it’s offensive line and how they paved the way for the above mentioned Dak and Zeke. Nowadays, it might be the defense that is the identity, but we can’t forget about that offensive line. And the struggles they were having. When the Cowboys brought on Paul Alexander to coach the line it turned out to be the opposite of a a match made in heaven. They made the decision to dump him and promote Marc Colombo but the first week against the Titans didn’t really make us believe. But then the Philly game happened. They haven’t been perfect. The Saints were all around Dak during that game and he is getting pressured too much in general. But one thing that is demonstrably better is their run blocking. As mentioned above, Zeke is now on track and is just 25 yards away from leading the league in rushing yards.Jason Garrett’s hot seat has frozen over… for nowThere was a thought heading into the Philly game, just a rumor among media and fans, that if the Cowboys got blown out by the Eagles in that November game, then Jerry Jones might pull a Wade Phillips maneuver on Jason Garrett and fire him mid-season. That’s how down everybody outside of the organization was on Garrett. Then the Eagles game happened. One of the things that was a flashpoint for fans was Garrett’s conservative nature. Suddenly, it was gone (kind of).But Garrett wasn’t finished with fourth-down surprises.Garrett is not totally off the hot seat. He needs to finish the season strong and make some playoff noise to truly solidify his status. But since the Eagles game, things are different when it comes to the temperature of his seating material.A little under a month ago, the Cowboys were dead and buried, at least that was a narrative and it was an easy one to believe. Now, they’re contenders on a four-game winning streak and looking to make their playoff push. This is why you never give up on a season.Bonus fun: Re-live the Cowboys win over the Eagles through the comments of other fans in an epic edition of Trolling The Nation.
